-Do your windows and doors have visible locks?
-How well lit is the outside of your home?
-Is there a spare key that’s easily visible, or easy to find, such as underneath the plant pot or above the ledge on the door?
-Are the lights on or off all the time, making it look like you’re away?
-Do you have high walls and hedges, which could give burglars protection from being seen?
-Is accessing your house noisy for a burglar?
Are there any ladders lying around that a burglar could use?
-What equipment do you keep in your shed and garage? -What is its value and can it be used to help someone break in?
-How secure is the shed or garage?
-Is it always kept locked with high-quality padlocks and security locks?

Choose the right alarm system for your home | Fitted Home Alarms UK

Choose the right alarm system for your home

Choose the right alarm system for your home

Studies have shown a well-fitted and maintained burglar alarm system makes you less likely to become a victim of burglary. Many home owners, like you require a home security system but don’t know where to start.

The best type of alarm for your home depends on your personal preferences, budget, where you live, what your home is like and what level of protection you need.

Alarms can be either wired or wireless. Wireless alarms look nicer, are generally easier to install and can be removed more easily if you move house. They use battery-powered sensors that communicate with a control panel using radio signals.

While this type of alarm tends to be cheaper to install professionally, or can be fitted yourself, the alarms themselves can be more expensive. Wired systems usually need to be installed by a professional, as the wires will need to be hidden, so labour costs are higher.

Wireless GSM Security Alarm System | Fitted Home Alarms UK

Wireless GSM Security Alarm System

Wireless GSM Security Alarm System

The latest technology in the world of wireless security alarms is the use of GSM technology (in other words alarms with mobile phones in). Wireless GSM alarms allow you to outwit a burglar or intruder on entry to your home or business. Using this mobile technology allows you to have a security alarm system which does not require a normal telephone landline which all other security alarms no matter how expensive they are require. There are two things burglars want to do, cut the electric and cut the phone line. This would disable the wide majority of security alarms working so they can enter the building with no detection. The bell/siren only security systems are even worse, all they need to do is put either shaving foam or expandable foam in the bell box!

Our GSM security alarm systems overcome the above issues.

The phone line has always been an issue with intruders easily being able to cut telephone lines as they run along outside walls of your home. The use GSM Security alarms cuts the need of a phone line out. Being able to phone the owners of a home or business up to alert them to the intrusion without the intruder having any clue is vital in security. If the alarm system is working off the backup battery and mobile networks there is very little the intruder can physically do before entry to stop the alarm from triggering.
Another added advantage of the GSM security alarm system is being able to hide the control panel in the building as it does not depend on the phone line it can be hidden anywhere. With any standard wireless system the intruder could quickly break in and cut the phone line to stop the owner being contacted. Furthermore this type of GSM alarm is perfect where a phone line isn’t present such as a building site, garden shed, farm building to name but a few.

Self MonitoredAlarms – What are my options? | Fitted Home Alarms UK

Self Monitored Alarms

Self Monitored Alarms

Alarm systems changed with technology and features over the years. Burglar Alarms advanced from rigid fully hard wired systems to wireless systems with more advanced connectivity, advanced security features like anti jamming, tamper warnings and frequency hopping to protect your home and valuable possessions.

One of the most noticeable features of the alarm systems is its ability to alert you if there is a break in attempt. This alert is not only limited to sounding the alarm outside and inside the house, but also to contact you or a list of your emergency contacts or keyholders. This remote alerting features can be done either through a third party monitored alarm or self monitored alarm. We have written in detail about the differences between third party monitored and self monitored alarms before. Self monitored alarms are relatively inexpensive, easy to manage and you don’t have to worry about being tied into a lengthy contract.

Click here for more on that : Third Party Monitored Burglar Alarms – Is it worth it?

With self – monitored alarms, there are three options of your alarm to contact you.

PSTN Connection:The alarm will use your landline at home to contact your mobile phone when the alarm goes off. All our telecommuncating alarms call a minimum of 3 numbers of your choice.

How does it work?: The alarm’s control panel is placed near a working telephone point, ideally within half a meter distance. It will be connected to the telephone point and the alarm will use the landline to call you when it goes off. You can continue to use your landline as normal and alarm will only need if it goes off.

Advantages: Cheapest self monitored alarm option and it uses your existing landline. There are no real ongoing costs apart from the cost a landline call to your mobile if the alarm goes off. These are about 7pence to 15 pence per call.

Disadvantages: Restricts location of control panel, as it needs to be nearer to telephone point.
If the landline cable is visible outside the house, there is always a risk of a burglar cutting the cable off before coming into the house.
Alarm will not call you if have a fault on your landline.

GSM Connection:Alarms can use a regular sized sim card placed inside the control panel to call you if it goes off. GSM alarms can call you, and also send you text alerts if the alarm goes off.

How does it work? Any regular size prepaid sim card (micro and nanosims will not work) with about £10.00 or so credit will be placed inside the control panel and will be used for calling you if the alarm goes off.

Advantages: More flexibility with location of the control panel, as only power supply is needed for the panel. GSM units can be programmed to text you for various alerts on events in the alarm, such as a power failure or tamper or connection problems with any accessories.

If you have multiple users for the alarm, it can be programmed to send one master user, text message to let them know when the alarm was switched on and off. If you assign individual Keyfobs or proximity tags to each user, you can identify who is turning the alarm on and off and when. Ideal for knowing your kids are back home safe or giving access to cleaners into house, or for use in a commercial premise.

We also have GSM alarms that comes with smart phone apps, these use the data connectivity (GPRS) in the sim card to communicate with the app in your iphone / android based phones.

Disadvantages:Advantages certainly outweigh disadvantages. However, you will have to top up most sim cards atleast once a year. Typical costs are in the region of £5 to £10 per year. You can have an online account to make sure you have sufficient credit.

If you are using an alarm with smart phone app, and the GSM unit incurs data charges, so make sure you are on a sim card that allows data communication. Go for a package that only charges for the actual data used, rather than the ones that offer unlimited data for a fixed fee. Alarms and app only use minimal data.

IP Connection: Consider having an alarm connected to your broadband router, this opens a choice of options with connectivity.

How does it work? You can have a network cable (RJ 45 / CAT 5 cable) or an additional wireless connector module to establish the connection. To connect the router by cables, it is recommended to place the control panel near the router and have a keypad near the front door.

Advantages:IP Module connectivity ensures the alarm is using your broadband for data connections between your alarm panel and smartphone app or any other remote access computer. This is the recommended solution to ensure fast transfer if you have cameras connected to the alarm.

Motion sensors with cameras built in (PIR Cameras) are great for verifying alarm and ensure there is no false alarms. Most alarms with camera will automatically send you images/ videos when the alarm goes off. You can also request the alarm to take a photo/ video for you from the app or a computer with remote login access to your burglar alarm system.

Disadvantages: You may need a keypad near front door for this solution to operate the alarm when you walk in to the house.

Most customers will still require a PSTN connection or GSM connection for the alarm to call you directly if it is go off.

IP Module connection with all the cameras added is the most advanced alarm security solution available in the market and hence can be bit more on the pricier side.

Conclusion:Decide on the features you want before picking on an alarm. We have systems that can fit all the above categories and more with different budget options as well.

If you like the idea of one of the advanced system, you can still choose an advanced system with the basic options to start with and update it on a later date. We can help you with that.

Home Security Alarm Tips | Fitted Home Alarms UK

Home Alarms

Home Alarms

Experts believe more than 10 million people worldwide fall victim to identity theft every each year. Protect yourself in 2015 by using home security systems. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the term home security system? Burglar Alarms,a device for automatically giving an alarm in case of burglary. Secure your home like never before!

Here are some Home security Alarm Tips to keep in mind:

  •  If you purchase an aftermarket system it will almost always be wireless, unless you want to rip your walls open. These systems can be attacked via timing and jamming, but most people don’t need to worry about that.
  • With a wireless system you have a visible box on each door and window covered. An attacker can almost always see these, so make sure you don’t skip any.
  • Standard door and window sensors are magnetic contact closure sensors. They only trigger if the magnet and the sensor are separated, which means they won’t detect the bad guy breaking the glass if the sensor doesn’t separate. You know, like they show in all those commercials (for the record I use ADT).
  • The same is true for wired sensors, except they aren’t as visible.
  • Unless you pay extra, all systems use your existing phone line with a special “capture” port that overrides other calls when the alarm needs it. For (possibly a lot) more you can get a dedicated cell phone line integrated into the alarm, so the call center still gets the alarm even if the phone lines are down. You probably want to make sure they aren’t on AT&T.
  • Most of the cheap alarm deals only give you a certain number of contact closure sensors and one “pet immune” motion sensor (placed centrally to trigger when someone walks down your major connecting hallway). Pay more to get all your first floor doors and windows covered. Get used to the ugly white boxes on everything.
  • Most alarm systems do not cover your exterior garage doors. The standard install protocol is to put a sensor on the door from your garage to the interior of the house. The only time we’ve been robbed is when we left our garage doors open, so since then we’ve always had them added to the system. They take a special contact closure sensor since the normal ones aren’t good with the standard rattling of a garage door and will trigger with the wind. Now every night when we set our alarm in “Stay” mode it won’t enable unless the doors are closed.
  • None of the basic systems includes a glass break detector. Most of these are noise sensors tuned to the frequency of glass breaking, rather than shatter sensors attached to each window. I highly suggest these and recommend you put them near the windows most likely to be broken into (ones hard to see from the street). Mine has only gone off once, when I dropped something down the stairs.
  • Understand which sensors are active in the two primary alarm modes – Stay and Away. Stay is the mode you use at night when you are sleeping (or if you are a helpless female in the kitchen in an ADT commercial). It usually arms the exterior sensors but not the motion sensor. Away is when you are out and turns on everything. I suggest having glass breaks active in Stay mode, but if you have a killer stereo/surround sound system that might not work out too well for you. There are also differences in arming times and disarming windows (the time from opening a door to entering your code).
  • When your alarm triggers it starts a call to the call center, who will call you back and then call the police. I’ve had my alarm going for a good 30 seconds without the outbound call hitting the alarm center. It isn’t like TV, and the cops won’t be showing up right away.
  • Most basic systems don’t cover the second story in a multilevel home. While few bad guys will use a ladder, know your home and if there are areas they can climb to easily using trees, gutters, etc. – such as windows over a low roof. Make sure you alarm these. Especially if you have daughters and want some control over their dating lives.
  • Most systems come with key fob remotes, so you don’t have to mess with the panel when you are going in and out. If you’re one of those people who parks in your driveway and leaves your garage and alarm remotes in the car, please send me your address and a list of your valuables. Extra points if you’re a Foursquare user.
  • Most alarms don’t come with a smoke detector, which is one of the most valuable components of the system. You regular detectors aren’t wired into an alarm sensor and are just to wake you up. Since we have pets, and mostly like them, we have a smoke detector in a central location as part of our alarm so the fire department will show up even if we aren’t around. We also have a residential sprinkler system, and as a former firefighter those things are FTW (no known deaths due to fire when one is installed and operational).
